Bangladesh Pratidin most read daily: Study
Bangla-language newspaper Bangladesh Pratidin is the most read printed newspaper in Bangladesh, according to a private research organisation.
Bangladesh Pratidin is leading the local newspaper industry with 6.8 million readers, followed by Prothom Alo with 5.59 million readers, according to the research conducted by Poriprekkhit.
Poriprekkhit Executive Director Syed Borhan Kabir presented the findings of the research styled ‘Will printed newspaper die in Bangladesh’ at a press meet at its office in city’s Dhanmondi on Wednesday.
A unit of printed newspaper represented 12 readers in the research. Readers of internet editions were kept out of the study. Poriprekkhit conducted the study using newspaper circulation data from hawkers as secondary data during the July-September period this year.
According to the research, Kaler Kantho is in the third position with 2.64 million readers, followed by daily Jugantor and daily Amader Somoy.
Data received from the hawkers show that Bangladesh Pratidin has a circulation base of 5.72 lakh while Prothom Alo hits the newspaper stands with 4.66 lakh units. Besides, Kaler Kantho has a circulation of 2.20 lakh, Jugantor 2 lakh and Amader Somoy 76 thousand.
The research also looked into some variables, such as news prediction, trustworthiness and neutrality in news presentation. A total of 1,000 readers representing professionals from different fields were interviewed to collect inputs against the variables.
Around 37 per cent readers reported that Bangladesh Pratidin predicts future issues well and 54 per cent readers mentioned that the newspaper presents neutral news.
In terms of trustworthiness, Bangladesh Pratidin is also in the top position as 47 per cent readers said the newspaper publishes authentic news. Prothom Alo and Daily Star scored 23 per cent and 11 per cent respectively in terms of trustworthiness.
The study data suggested that 23 per cent readers find neutral news in Prothom Alo while its predictability is visible to 26 per cent readers. English newspaper Daily Star is acceptable as a neutral outlet to 11 per cent readers surveyed during the research.
Of the country’s total population of 170 million, there are 36.8 million newspaper readers in the country while 20.2 million readers read multiple newspapers every day, according to the data.
Bangladesh Pratidin is leading the global market of Bangla newspaper by launching printed editions from the United States and the United Kingdom.
