Bashundhara City to reopen soon

The authorities of the country’s first multi-storied modern Bashundhara City shopping mall, which witnessed a fire incident on Sunday, have started cleaning and renovation work to reopen the market at the earliest.
After bringing the fire under full control on Sunday night, the fire service personnel accomplished the task of dumping on Monday, sources said. As the shoes and bags at some shoe stores in the Block-C at Level-6 of the shopping mall were burnt, simmering fire like a coil was seen. Basically, smoke coming from such spots creates panic. The fire service personnel searched for such simmering fire in the closed shops and doused them.
Also, the work for cleaning other areas of the market started yesterday. The authorities and the traders said they are trying to reopen the shopping mall within a day or two.
The fire had originated from a shoe store at Block-C on the Level-6 of the most popular Bashundhara City shopping mall on Sunday at around 11:00am on Sunday. The fire fighters of Bashundhara City and 29 units of fire service soon swung into action to bring the fire under control. At that time, panic spread all around as smoke billowed from the shopping mall. The fire service authorities announced at night that they brought the fire under full control. Afterwards, the dumping work started.DG of Fire Service Brig Gen Ali Ahmed Khan said yesterday that somewhere inside simmering fire or coil of coal were there. This has been so due to burning of the leather of shoes. The fire is being doused by breaking open the shutter of every store in the Block-C.
On Monday afternoon, Head of Marketing of Bashundhara City Development Limited MM Jasimuddin briefed the journalists on the overall condition of the market.
He said, “Our fire fighting operation is almost complete. The fire service personnel are accomplishing the dumping task inside. Our workers are also doing the maintenance work. We have got the preliminary list of the affected businessmen which showed that 11 shops at Block-C on Level-6 have been completely gutted. Some parts, including the ceiling, of 20-22 establishments, have been damaged. In the Block-C, there are 60-65 shops. Now, breaking the shutters of the shops, the coal and smoke of combustible materials are being controlled. The Fire Service was supposed to complete the dumping work by Monday and after that our technical and surveillance team was scheduled to start work.”
MM Jasimuddin also said, “The Fire Service has constituted a probe committee. We will also form a six-member committee which will find out whether there was negligence on the part of anybody. Side by side, the cause of the fire incident will be found out. There was adequate fire fighting arrangements at Bashundhara City. More than one lakh visitors come here every day. The water used by the fire service after the fire incident was supplied totally by us. As we earlier implemented all the recommendations made after a previous fire incident, we managed to take all the people to safety this time and restrict the fire to a place.”
Stating that the market will be reopened within the shortest possible time, the representative of the Bashundhara City authorities said the technical committee will sit in a meeting after the fire service hands over the charge of the market to us. And the decision on when the market will be reopened will be taken at that time.
President of Bashundhara City Shop Owners’ Association AM Hannan Azad said, “We are trying to reopen the market tomorrow (Wednesday). Eid shopping is about to start. Everyone will suffer a loss if the shops remain closed for a day.”
The five-member probe committee of Fire Service visited the spot yesterday. The head of the committee Engineer Ajit Kumar Bhowmik expressed the hope that they would be able to start the investigation from Tuesday (today).
