Free cataract surgery at Bashundhara Eye Hospital
A total of 20 patients underwent cataract surgery for free at Bashundhara Eye Hospital and Research Institute in the capital on Thursday.
US ophthalmic surgeon Dr Matti Vazeen, director of Center for Advance Eye Care, Nevada conducted Phacoemulsification Cataract Surgery on the patients.
Prof Dr Md Saleh Ahmed, director of the hospital, surgeon Prof Dr SM Munirul Huq and senior consultant Dr Moutushi Islam assisted the US surgeon with the surgery free of charge. Centre for Advance Eye Care, USA, Vision Care Foundation and Bashundhara Eye Hospital and Research Institute jointly conducted the campaign.
Dr Md Saleh Ahmed said, “As part of our regular free eye camps, we conducted the surgery on the patients at no cost this time too. “When we came to know that Dr Vazeen would arrive in Dhaka, we approached him to contribute to our cause and he agreed.”
He went on saying, “I have learnt teaching of charity while I was a medical student. My mother was suffering from eye problem, but she couldn’t undergo surgery because of her heart complications. “Feeling the pain suffered by my mother, I have decided to become an eye specialist and help the people of the country.”
Mohammad Ahsan Habib, manager (human resources and administration) of the hospital, said, “With the help of Bashundhara Group, We are tirelessly working to eliminate blindness from the country.”
The leading business conglomerate of the country Bashundhara Group has set up Bashundhara Eye Hospital and Research Institute to provide patients with world-class eye treatment.
The hospital is being run with the technical support of Vision Care Foundation with the aim of eliminating blindness from the country.
The hospital is a charitable and non-profitable organization, but those who can afford to bear the cost of treatment have to pay a token fee.
The underprivileged people who have no financial ability to receive treatment have access to free eye treatment from the hospital through a one-stop service.
A group of noted ophthalmologists of the Vision Care Foundation operate the hospital located at Sabrina Sobhan Road in Bashundhara Residential Area in the city.
Bashundhara Group has provided the hospital with its building, land, interior decorations and all air condition facilities.
The group on its humanitarian grounds set up such philanthropic, non-profit tertiary eye hospital for commoners, especially for the poor and destitute.
With a view to bringing poor and destitute people under its treatment coverage, the hospital has started treatment services in April in 2014.
The hospital renders Cataract Clinic, Cornea Clinic, Vitreo-Retina Clinic, Glaucoma Clinic, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Orbit and Oculoplasty, Contact Lens, Low Vision Aid, X-ray and Imaging, Diagnostic Laboratory, Perimetry, B-Scam Ultra Sound, Biometry, and Pachymetry medical services to the common people.
There is also a Zakat Fund in the hospital through which the needy and impoverished patients can receive any kinds of eye treatment free of cost.
`The hospital has so far organised a number of outreach eye camps to provide poverty-stricken patients with free treatment at different places, including Banchharampur in Brahmanbaria, Kalachandpur, Korail slum and Presidency University in the capital, Aman Spinning Mills Ltd at Savar and Sakhipur in Tangail.
