Magura District Sports Association clinched the title of ‘Sheikh Russel Gold Cup Football Tournament 2017’ beating Lt Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Ltd by 3-1 goals in the final at Muktijoddha Asaduzzaman Stadium in Magura on Friday.
Bashundhara Cement, a sister concern of the country’s largest business conglomerate Bashundhara Group, sponsored the tournament.
Sushanto of Magura DSA scored the first goal in the 6th minute. Later, Sabuj and Jamril of the same team scored one goal each on 61st and 82nd minutes respectively. Later, Sabuj was adjudged the player of the match.
Sheikh Jamal, fighting from three goals short, scored their consolation goal in the 84th minute, courtesy of midfielder Javed.
A total of 16-team took part in the tournament. Country’s renowned football teams like Sheikh Jamal, Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Ltd, Bashundhara Kings, Saif Sporting Club Youth Team, Bangladesh Navy and Asaduzzaman Football Academy of Magura ensured their participation in the tourney.
State Minister for Youth and Sports Dr Sri Biren Sikder handed over the trophy to the winners.
Kamrul Laila Joly, MP, Deputy Commissioner of Magura Mohammad Atiqur Rahaman, President of Magura District Awami League Tanzel Hossain Khan, Prime Minister’s APS Saifuzzaman Shikhor, Chairman of the District Council Pankaj Kumar Kundu and General Secretary of District Sports Council Alhaj Mokbul Hossain, among others were present on the occasion.
