Bashundhara Shuvosangho Abhoynagar upazila unit distributed sewing machines to 20 women from the flood-prone Bhobdah area on Sunday to promote self-reliance among underprivileged women. The distribution took place at Nawapara Press Club auditorium in the morning, following a three-month sewing training programme for the beneficiaries in Sundoli Union. The ceremony was presided over by Bashundhara Shuvosangho Abhoynagar adviser and Press Club president S M Mujibur Rahman. Guests included Abhoynagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sheikh Salauddin Dipu, former principal of Nawapara Government College Robiul Hasan, Bashundhara Shuvosangho director Zakaria Zaman, Medical Officer of Upazila Health Complex Dr Ferdous Shanto, former Press Club president Nazrul Islam Mallik, senior vice-president Mozaffar Ahmed, acting general secretary Ashraf Hossain Prince, sports secretary M M Alauddin, treasurer Mallik Khalilur Rahman, and Shuvosangho officials including president Syed Sohaib Imtiaz Yad and general secretary Aqib Hossain Galib. The event was hosted by Shuvosangho adviser and Kaler Kantho Abhoynagar correspondent Syed Zahid Masud Taj.
Zakaria Zaman said Bashundhara Group supports women by providing sewing machines after training, with nearly 3,000 machines already distributed across the country. He added that the organisation also runs scholarships for underprivileged students, builds homes for the homeless, and carries out other social and humanitarian initiatives.
Recipients expressed gratitude. Tukkuki Mondal of Sundoli Union said, “After three months of training, I received a new sewing machine. I hope to use it to support my family and stand on my own feet.” Mita Das from Dohormoshihaati village said, “People in Bhobdah face severe hardships due to floods. Many promise help but leave without support. Bashundhara Shuvosangho kept its promise and gave us sewing machines after training. I am grateful to the group.”
Syed Sohaib Imtiaz Yad said the organisation will continue supporting social welfare initiatives and work alongside the community as a partner in humanitarian activities. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sheikh Salauddin Dipu praised the initiative, calling it commendable for empowering women and enhancing their self-reliance.
