Under the initiative of Bashundhara Shuvosangho, sewing machines were distributed among 60 underprivileged women in Khalishpur, Khulna. The machines were handed over to the beneficiaries on Saturday at the auditorium of Collegiate Girls’ School. In addition, sewing training programs were inaugurated in Bogura, assistance was provided for admission to a medical college in Lama, Bandarban, and a discussion meeting was organized in Shayestaganj, Habiganj.
According to reports from correspondents:
Expressing her feelings after receiving a sewing machine, Hanufa Begum of Maheshwarpasha in Daulatpur, Khalishpur, said, “We are a family of six with four children. The earning member of our family is confined at home after an accident. Managing school expenses for the children has become very difficult. We do not even have a secure place to live. Receiving this sewing machine feels like getting a new life. Whatever happens, I will be able to work, earn, and survive. I searched everywhere for work, but no one offered me a job. I hope Bashundhara Group continues to stand beside people like us.”
Like Hanufa, all 60 women—each struggling with hardship and survival—shared their emotions upon receiving the sewing machines. Another beneficiary, Mandira Roy Puja, said, “Just as I have benefited from Bashundhara Group, I also want to stand beside others according to my ability, alongside my own work, so that they too can become self-reliant.”
The chief guest at the event was Professor Faruk-e-Azam, Principal of Government Haji Muhammad Muhsin College. Zakaria Zaman, Director of Bashundhara Shuvosangho, delivered the welcome address.
Speakers included Mizanur Rahman Milton, General Secretary of the Khulna Regional Newspaper Council and Editor of the local daily Khulananchal; Syeda Ishrat Jahan, Acting Headmistress of Khalishpur Collegiate Girls’ School; Maulana Hafez Abed Ali Sharif, Pesh Imam of Khulna Power Plant Jame Mosque; Shahina Khatun, Headmistress of Newsprint Secondary School; and Shahidul Islam, Headmaster of Khalishpur Secondary School, among others.
Professor Faruk-e-Azam said, “Our country needs employment initiatives, which the government alone cannot undertake. Bashundhara Group has created employment opportunities for underprivileged women, which can serve as a model for others. I express my gratitude for this socially responsible initiative. To my knowledge, many mothers and sisters run their families with the help of a single sewing machine. The women who received machines today will also become self-reliant in the future. I hope Bashundhara continues such activities.”
Zakaria Zaman said Bashundhara Group has stood beside underprivileged women as part of its social responsibility. The group has been supporting people during various disasters across the country. Under the guidance of Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, Bashundhara Shuvosangho’s free sewing training and sewing machine distribution programs will help illuminate the lives of marginalized women.
