Bashundhara Group distributes interest-free loans among 201 women in Cumilla

Bashundhara Group, through its arm Bashundhara Foundation, on Monday distributed interest-free, service charge-free and mortgage-free loans among 201 women from five villages of Homna upazila, Cumilla.

Total Tk32 lakh was distributed at the 80th edition of the regular loan distribution event held at Haripur village in the upazila. Around 30 thousand families in Cumilla and Brahmanbaria have benefitted from the special loans over the past two decades.

At Monday’s event, Imdadul Haq Milan and Moynal Hossain Chowdhury, advisors to Bashundhara Group, were present, among others. Organizers said that the women of Homna upazila in Cumilla are each fighters in their own right. They work tirelessly day and night to support their families, but due to a lack of capital, their dreams of becoming self-reliant kept getting hindered. At that crucial moment, Bashundhara Foundation—operated with the support of Bashundhara Group—have regularly stepped forward to help make their dreams a reality.

In the past, many women became destitute in Cumilla and Brahmanbaria after falling into the trap of high-interest loans from moneylenders or NGOs. However, the interest- and service charge–free loans from Bashundhara Foundation have brought them relief and improved their quality of life.

Writer Imdadul Haq Milan, addressing the women who came to receive the loans, said that Bashundhara Group has set a rare example by providing interest-free, service charge–free, and collateral-free loans. He added, “The honorable Chairman of Bashundhara Group stands beside you to help improve your living standards. Our hope is that you will restore stability to your households with this interest- and service charge–free loan. Please do not misuse this money. Use it wisely and lead a better life—this is our heartfelt wish.”

Moynal Hossain Chowdhury said that Bashundhara Foundation identifies impoverished women in villages and provides them with small loans to help them become self-reliant. Loans are given only to those who can use the money properly and productively.

Local residents said that Bashundhara Group has always stood beside ordinary people not only through loan assistance but also through various other initiatives such as scholarships, free medical services, and free sewing machines distribution after training.
